SU2ClogoAs you know MasterCard® and I partnered together for this blog.

Betty Barionuevo was a model small business boss who loved life and shared her life journey freely. She was the fun type who dressed up for every holiday, from the Easter Bunny to the classic Halloween witch. I saved this final holiday letter from Betty, some twenty years ago:

A Good News Story

“A beauty I am not. Yet while visiting Pier 39 at Fisherman’s Wharf San Francisco, a group of Asian tourists swarmed around me and were obviously studying me.

A young spokes-girl came forward to explain, “My mother thinks you are so beautiful.” I smiled, “Oh, she is very kind, thank you.”

A few minutes passed and she came forward once again, “May we take your picture?” “Of course.” I cooperated, although a bit bewildered.

You see today I was dressed in a sweat suit and slacks and a scarf on my head…I had no sequins or pearls…only remnants of a splash of blush and a dab of lipstick faded from the morning application. Just that morning I had lost all my hair and flushed it down the toilet before wrapping my bald head in my little cotton scarf.

What a blessing to receive this random act of kindness…today of all days.”

At the time I thought, how could others who have been touched by cancer make a difference? Today, I can’t think of a single person in my life who has not been touched in some way by this disease.

But there is hope…

MasterCard® has spearheaded the Priceless Causes™, a campaign to support Stand Up to Cancer®. From July 1st to September 15th, when you spend $10 or more with your MasterCard at for a meal, MasterCard will make a donation to Stand Up to Cancer, up to $4,000,000, one precious cent at a time.*

That’s right, up to 4 million dollars.

And, Stand Up to Cancer received an “A” from CharityWatch. That means they spend 75% or more of their budget on programs.

How Small Business Owners Can Help

When you take your clients, employees or significant other out for a meal July 1st to September 15th, simply pick up the tab with your MasterCard and you can help fight cancer.  When you spend $10 or more when paying for a meal, MasterCard will make a penny donation to Stand up to Cancer. You can support Priceless Causes by letting your customers know about the campaign.

How Your Local Restaurant Can Help

Draw attention to the Priceless Causes campaign to let your customers feel good about spending money with you. Put up a sign, update your Facebook page; throw out a couple tweets, the more the merrier. {can we link to templated materials?}

Knowing you are a socially conscious business gets you word of mouth in unexpected ways.

The Bottom Line

If you have a Betty in your life, or a Bill or an acquaintance that has dealt with cancer, I’m sure you can appreciate the value such a partnership can mean to research and development.

I know I do.

Now go to  priceless.com/causes to learn more and tell your friends.

*Certain terms and conditions apply.   The $.01 applies to qualifying restaurant purchases made with US MasterCards.  Promotion ends at our $4 million goal.   PIN and international transactions ineligible.  SU2C is a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation.
